I have been waiting forever to post these photos because I am so desperately in love with this wedding.. It was my last wedding of 2008, and definitely one of my favorites, especially because it was so unique. From the location to Jenni’s attire to the reception schedule, everything was just a little bit different. Jenni and Cade were both so easygoing, it was obvious that they cared much more about being with each other and spending time with their friends than adhering to the traditional wedding routine. It was definitely a laid back, intimate affair, and one of the most beautiful ceremonies I’ve ever had the privilege of shooting. The vast majority of my ceremonies are held in dark churches with strict photography rules that limit me to basically one perspective. It was such a breath of fresh air – literally! – to be able to shoot a sunny, outdoor wedding where I could be free to be more artistic and try different angles and perspectives. I wish more of my brides would consider this option for their wedding – it makes for some unbelievable photos!

Here are a few of my favorite images from their wedding day:

Jenni and Cade, thank you so much for allowing me to spend your wedding day with you. It truly was one of my favorite thus far, and you guys taught me a lot about how a small, relaxed, unique wedding can be just as meaningful and memorable as a big, traditional, no-holds-barred wedding. And thanks for being patient on the blog post, too! ;)

Also a huge shout out to the lovely and talented Gara for sending these two my way and for being her fabulous self!!

Tips for Brides (T4B) is a weekly feature where I talk about a cool tip that I think will benefit brides everywhere. For more T4Bs, click here!

Although not everyone does this, at many of my weddings the bride and groom choose to give each other special gifts to commemorate the wedding day. For bride’s gifts I often see a lot of beautiful earrings and necklaces, as well as cameras, cell phones, poems, and once even a new Louis Vuitton purse (Ashley, you’re a lucky girl!), but for the groom’s gift it seems like it almost always ends up being a nice pair of cufflinks. Now, there’s nothing wrong with cufflinks – I think every guy should have a special, personalized pair – but if your man already has cufflinks or if you’re looking for something a bit more (or if you’re looking for a really REALLY nice gift for your groomsmen, as well), you might consider purchasing a custom tailored suit. And lucky for you, I know just the man who can make that happen for you!

Drew Jones is one of my closest friends and a former client, and he sells some of the coolest suits I’ve ever seen. Ever since I saw his handiwork on the groom and groomsmen’s suits at his own wedding, I’ve been completely in love with the custom tailored look. The suits are made-to-order to fit their owner, right down to the exact centimeter, and can be made from literally hundreds of different fabric options.

Here’s how it works:  Drew or one of his associates will come to your home or business, take your measurements, and give you books upon books of fabric samples to choose from.  If you’re not sure what you want, Drew has an AMAZING sense of style, he can definitely give you some great recommendations based on what you’re looking for.  Here is the look he put together for his own wedding:

He has lots of suit options – double breasted, one and two buttons, vented, double vented, non vented, etc – as well as many different types of pants, vests, shirts, and sports jackets in any number of colors and patterns.  I’ve already talked two of my clients into purchasing them, and I liked them so much I ordered two sports jackets for my boyfriend Jason! Here’s the one he got for Christmas:

And one we purchased mid-last year:

The best part is that the costs are totally reasonable.  If you plan to wear a suit, shirt, jacket, or pair of pants more than once in your life, it’s worth investing in a custom pair that fit you perfectly so that you feel comfortable and look sharp.  You can check out more of Drew’s suits (and some of my photos!) on his website at www.djonescollection.com.  Be sure and tell him Stacy sent you!

T4P – Second Shooting

Tips for Photographers (T4P) is a regular feature where I talk about a cool tip that I think will benefit my fellow photographers. For more T4Ps, click here!

One of the primary things I hear from new photographers just breaking into the biz is that they have a really hard time getting experience. They e-mail every local photographer in their area, and never get any response.  This isn’t surprising to me, considering that I receive 3-4 e-mails from “wannabe” wedding photographers every week asking to second shoot with me.  If I said yes to all of them, I would easily have 5-10 people following me around at every wedding!  Not only would this be a mess, it would be unprofessional and unfair to the client.  As a paid professional, I am at weddings to work, not to teach, so I only bring people with me who already have some experience and who are ready to do the job I assign them to do without me having to keep an eye on them.  This is why I pretty much universally say “no” when people ask me if they can shadow me.

Of course, there’s a catch-22 in there.. You have to have experience to shoot, but you have to shoot to have experience.  So what do you do if you have the desire but not the experience?  Well, mass e-mailing hundreds of people you don’t know telling them that someday you want to be their competition, but for now you just want to follow them around and take all their trade secrets probably isn’t the best course of action!

The first step is to form a personal relationship with your colleagues.  Become more than a face in a crowd.  Find out what forums they frequent and participate in active threads, provide feedback (honest feedback, not just empty praise), get involved in heated discussions.. Show your fellow photographers that you’re serious about this business and you have an honest desire to learn.  If your colleagues don’t participate in forums, arrange local get-togethers or join local guilds.  In Dallas we have several branches of the PPA that hold monthly meetings, and many of the non-PPA crowd  get together for lunch or poker every couple of weeks.  Someone is much more likely to give you a chance to work for them if they consider you a friend, or at least a colleague.

The second step is to be willing to pay your dues. Metaphorically speaking, you should be willing to do some of the grunt work – carrying bags, holding flashes, backing up cards, etc. – before you ever expect to take a photograph.  Think of yourself as an intern.. You have to do the crappy work for free before you can do the fun, skilled stuff for pay.   This is how it works in every indsutry, so wedding photography should be no different!  Literally speaking, you should also be willing to put your money where your mouth is.  If there’s one photographer in particular that you really like, e-mail them and offer to take them out to lunch at a fancy restaurant, or offer to pay them to do a day-long consultation with you.  If you truly value their advice, you’ll be willing to invest in such a great, personalized learning experience.

Remember, everyone’s time is valuable.  Before asking someone to spend time on you, you should be willing to spend either time or money investing in them, as well.  Good luck!  Here’s a photo of me and my second shooter (who has been a friend and fellow photographer since college, as well as one of my past clients) Jena at a recent wedding.  What can I say, we love our job :)

Now that Carrie Alexander is officially Carrie Short, I am very happy to be able to publish her bridals. Carrie’s session will always be one of my favorite bridals ever for a few reasons.. It was definitely one of the coolest locations I’ve ever had access to. Due to an unexpected bankruptcy at her original reception venue, Carrie was left without a location for her reception a few short months before the wedding. Although this might have ruined the wedding experience for some brides, Carrie made the most of it by finding a new reception hall that her baseball-loving fiance Preston was very very excited about – Union Station at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston, home to the Houston Astros baseball team. She even threw in some Astros-themed surprises for Preston, but you’ll have to wait to see their wedding pics for those!

Another thing I loved about this session was Carrie’s long veil. I’m such a sucker for long veils, they’re such an amazing prop for the photo session. Something about the long, cascading blanket of tulle blowing in the wind is so graceful and lovely. I actually have several long veils that I own, so if you are one of my clients and you plan on using a short veil (or no veil) on your wedding day but you would like to borrow a long one for your Bridal or Day After session, let me know!

Another thing I really enjoyed about this session was Carrie’s attitude. Carrie is such a naturally friendly, upbeat girl, but it really shined through on her bridal session. The weather was freezing and gloomy and the rain made it difficult to maneuver around in a bright white satin dress without ruining it, but she was up for anything and kept a smile on her face the whole time. I always tell people that I am *SO* lucky to have never had a Bridezilla (knock on wood!) but it goes further than that.. I truly have had the nicest, sweetest, most positive brides I could have ever hoped for, without exception.. I am incredibly lucky!

I just finished Carrie and Preston’s wedding photos, so I can’t wait to get them back on the blog soon.

Tomorrow I have a big surprise – the long overdue return of Tips for Brides, Tips for Photographers, and Humpdates!!

Lilly and Brad are definitely two of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met. They are attractive, stylish, trendy, and naturally comfortable in front of the camera. There’s just something so inherently sexy about them when they get together, it’s like they just “fit.” Their engagement session at the Dallas Arboretum is one of my favorite sessions to date! Here are some of my picks:

Unfortunately their February wedding has been postponed due to Brad’s service in the armed forces, but I can’t wait to shoot it once they set a new date. I can already tell it’s going to be fabulous!

Happy Birthday to the handsomest, sexiest, funniest, smartest boyfriend I’ve got… at the moment.. ;)  Juuust kidding!!
You are wonderful and I’m so lucky to have you in my life!

Couple needed

I have a REALLY cool new project and I need a couple to volunteer to pose for me ASAP!! However, there are a few requirements:

1) The shoot would need to be in North Dallas around 2-3 PM on a *weekday*, sometime in the next two weeks
2) You’ll need to have access to your own wedding gown and suit (this isn’t a dealbreaker, but it’s highly preferred.. If your man doesn’t have a tux, khaki pants and a crisp white shirt will work just fine). The gown may get a little dusty, but not wet or stained or anything like that.
3) You have to be willing to go wherever I want to take you for about 2 hours.. Don’t worry, nowhere shady :)
4) You must be a real couple, madly in love and not afraid to show it

As my thanks for your time, you’ll get all the full-resolution digital files from your shoot ($650 value) and I’ll give you a 10% discount on any prints you want to purchase through me.

If you’re interested, shoot me an e-mail at info@stacyreeves.com and please include a photo of you and your beloved (and your dress, if you’ve got one)!
