Ch-ch-ch-chaaaanges!

Lately I have not been posting nearly as much as I usually do, and it’s certainly not because I don’t have anything to show you! 2009 is going to be my busiest year, with 24+ weddings and countless engagement, bridal, and day after sessions. In fact, I’ve already shot seven weddings, six bridals, and eight engagement sessions this year so far, most of which haven’t even shown up on the blog yet! The primary reason for this is that everything about my business is about to undergo a huge overhaul. When I parted ways with my previous studio last year, I had to get my business up to speed very quickly and efficiently, and unfortunately that meant sacrificing some things. In December, I took the entire month off to step back and really evaluate myself and my business and specifically my brand, and decide where I wanted to take Stacy Reeves Photography. I hired a team of talented professionals to help me through this process, and I’m so excited about what is in store for the future of SRP. However, this takes time and patience, so please bear with me as I prepare to take my first steps into Version 3.0 of Stacy Reeves Photography.

In the next month, you’ll be seeing a lot of changes, and I can’t wait to give all of you a sneak peek of what my current and future clients will be experiencing. Here are a few of my favorite touches!!

hints

When it’s finally time to reveal everything, I will have a lot to say about the branding process, what to consider, what to hire a professional for and what to do yourself, etc. This has been a truly eye-opening experience! I also can’t wait to share why I made the decisions I made, and how they will impact how I run my business in the future. 2009 is going to be an amazing year!  In the meantime, I promise to get some photos up.. possibly with a little hint of things to come thrown in with them, as well!

Okay, I know I say this a lot… But really.. This was one of my favorite weddings ever!! From Jaclyn’s soft, ethereal gown to Charlie’s heirloom button covers to the gorgeous church to the intimate reception, everything was so elegant and lovely. It truly felt like the perfect wedding – not in the sense that nothing went wrong, but in the sense that everything fit these two to a T, and nothing could have stopped them from having a great time. I have so many fun stories to tell about these images!

Jaclyn’s dress was by far one of my top two or three favorites ever… The fabric was incredibly soft and light, you serously just wanted to curl up with it and use it as a blanket.  It had to be the most comfortable dress ever, and it looked like it, as I didn’t see Jaclyn tugging or adjusting or straightening it the entire day.

Okay, talk about bad luck.. Not only did Jaclyn break a finger and have to wear a cast on her hand.. She broke her left hand RING FINGER!!  Of all the digits to break!!  It didn’t seem to phase her one bit, though, and she pulled off her satin-ribbon-wrapped cast with complete grace.wedding photography of Jaclyn Herfarth and Charlie Harrison at the Magnolia Ballroom in Houston Texas by Dallas wedding photographer Stacy Reeves

I couldn’t be happier that Jaclyn and Charlie chose to do a First Look.  It allowed me to get a *TON* of beautiful images of them and their wedding party, which I wouldn’t have been able to do normallydue to their post-sunset-ceremony.wedding photography of Jaclyn Herfarth and Charlie Harrison at the Magnolia Ballroom in Houston Texas by Dallas wedding photographer Stacy Reeves

After the ceremony, they ran to the ball tower and began ringing the massive bell to let everyone around them know they were finally man and wife!wedding photography of Jaclyn Herfarth and Charlie Harrison at the Magnolia Ballroom in Houston Texas by Dallas wedding photographer Stacy Reeves
Okay this is something I definitely DON’T recommend for everyone.. Typically we try and get all the wedding guests out the door as quickly as possible so we can get through the family formals ASAP.  However, because they chose to do a First Look, because of the layout of the church, and because they kept family formals extremely short, we were able to get a photo of all the wedding attendees in one place.wedding photography of Jaclyn Herfarth and Charlie Harrison at the Magnolia Ballroom in Houston Texas by Dallas wedding photographer Stacy Reeves

Easily the highlight of my wedding season so far.. Charlie performed at his own reception, singing a couple of his own songs, including one he wrote for Jaclyn early on in their relationship, aptly titled “I’m 100% Not Gay”

J&C, your wedding was such a fun experience for me, and I couldn’t be happier to kick off 2009 celebrating the both of you. Your love for each other and your warmth for all your friends and family has been so evident in everything, and I really do feel honored to have shared this experience with you both!!

Stephanie and Tim

I’m pretty sure when I told Stephanie and Tim that I wanted to shoot their engagement session at a shopping mall and an old field, they were definitely second guessing their choice of photographer for their engagement session. Luckily, they stuck with me and my crazy location ideas, and it definitely, DEFINITELY paid off for all three of us. This ranks pretty high up there on my list of favorite engagement sessions, mostly because it’s so unique and so much FUN. Plus these two are pretty stellar models! Here are some of my faves:

This little guy (and about eight of his buddies) decided they wanted to come to the picture party too.. I’m heartbroken that I won’t be photographing Stephanie and Tim’s wedding, but I can’t wait to do a Day After session with them when they get back! S&T, thanks so much for braving freezing weather, angry horses, and possible criminal trespassing charges to spend an afternoon with me. Have fun in Hawaii!

T4B – Be in the know!

Tips for Brides (T4B) is a regular feature where I talk about a cool tip that I think will benefit brides everywhere. For more tips, click here!

Okay I know I JUST posted a T4B, but I came across something stellar and had to post it here. One of my favorite coordinators, Kathie Seeley of Grand Events, posts a weekly schedule on her blog of all the cool wedding-related things going on in Dallas every weekend. This week is especially exciting because there will be a Monique Lhuillier showing at Neiman Marcus downtown! *SWOON* I am slightly obsessed with Monique Lhuillier.. No one knows how to make a more feminine, romantic dress than she does. There’s also some great trunk shows, as well as a showing of gorgeous veils and headpieces at Stanley Korshak.

Brides and future brides, I highly recommend adding Kathie’s blog to your Bloglines, Google Reader, or whatever you use to keep track of your blog-stalking indulgences.

To continue in my series of educating brides, I want to talk a little bit about the benefits of having a second shooter. For me, it’s a crucial choice, and I very VERY rarely allow my brides to purchase wedding commissions from me without a second photographer. Here’s why:

1) I am only one person, and I can only be in one place, and looking one direction. If I am photographing the bride putting on her dress, who is photographing the groom sharing a last-minute beer with his lifelong best friend? If I am photographing the bride entering the church, who is photographing the look on the groom’s face as he sees her for the first time? A second photographer provides a chance for me to tell the love story more fully, from two pairs of eyes rather than one.

2) Accidents happen. What if I fall deathly ill the morning of a wedding? What if I get in a car accident on the way to the reception? What if I slip and fall and break my hands at a ceremony and I’m no longer able to hold a camera? It’s morbid to think about, but I’ve seen it happen to my colleagues before. Thanks to my second shooter, it’s all a non-issue. My seconds are very capable photographers who are able to carry on without me and continue coverage uninterrupted.

3) Lighting. My reception lighting style requires the use of wirelessly-transmitted off-camera flash, which is a fancy way of saying, the flash isn’t on top of my camera. At wedding receptions, my second often handles the flash while I shoot. This allows her to change the lighting on a moment’s notice, which gives me more artistic lighting, and more importantly, more accurate lighting, so the chances of me missing a great shot are substantially lower. I can achieve a similar effect by mounting my flashes on light stands, but because these flashes are hard to adjust, I am typically confined to one area when I do this.

4) Additional backup gear. Although I do have backup gear of my own, there’s always the chance that I could be mugged, or my car could get stolen the night before, or someone could walk up and take it all while I’m not looking. I do everything I can to avoid this, but just in case it does happen, I always know that my second has gear of her own that I can use in a dire emergency.

On the other hand, here is what a second photographer ISN’T: a duplicate of me. There’s a reason you’re going to pay substantially more for the first photographer than you will for the second. The second shooter’s job is to supplement coverage with different angles, different lighting, and different people, and to do some of the less important tasks – setting up flashes, gathering people for formals, ensuring that the bride and groom don’t see each other before they’re supposed to, clearing background debris, etc. – so that I don’t have to stop shooting to do those things myself. You really can’t and shouldn’t expect to receive the same quantity or quality of images from the second shooter, because they are there to provide a different type of service than the primary photographer.

There are many talented photographers who have had a very successful career shooting on their own with no second, and I’ve done it several times myself. However, I truly feel that shooting solo is risky business, and I believe all clients are best served with more than one photographer present. If your photographer offers a second shooter, and it’s in your budget, I strongly encourage you to get one. Think of it this way – you’ll never regret hiring them, but there’s a good chance you’ll regret it if you don’t!

Just to make sure I have some photos in here, here are some of my fave photos my awesome second shooters have taken lately:

T4P – What’s in My Bag

Lately I have received a lot of questions about what kind of gear I use, so I figured it was about time for an updated What’s in My Bag post! When I’m shooting, I always carry the same gear on me:

Shootsac or Kelly Moore Bag
Canon 5D Mark III
Canon 50 f1.2L (stays on my camera the majority of the time)
Canon 100 f2.8 Macro (mostly for detail shots like rings and some portraits)
Canon 35 f2 (great for big sweeping ceremony photos, wedding party photos, large formals, and reception dancing photos)
Canon 70-200 2.8L (used during the ceremony for closeups)
Canon ST-E2 Wireless Transmitter (for firing my flashes)

I like to work light, so this is the only gear I actually carry around with me (plus copious amounts of memory cards and batteries). I also have a second gear bag that holds all my miscellaneous items. This gear serves as my backup kit, as well as supplemental gear for my second shooter, should she need it.

Lowepro Pro Roller 2

Canon 5D Mark II (backup camera)
Canon 16-35 2.8L
Canon 28 2.8
Canon 85 1.8
Canon 50 1.4
Tamron 28-75 2.8
Canon 580 EX (4)
Canon ST-E2 (backup)
Canon flash sync cord
Ice Light
2 Lightstands
1 Monopod (to use a light-on-a-stick, as held by my assistant)

Here are a few things I DON’T use (nothing against any of these items, I just don’t find them necessary for my shooting style):
-Lensbabies
-Pocket Wizards (I own them for emergencies, but rarely use them)
-Filters
-Flash diffusers (I have a couple but they have been gathering dust since I bought them)
-Strobes
-Flash brackets
-White balance tools (ExpoDisc, grey card, etc)
-Reflectors (again, I have a couple, but I never use them)

There are a lot of neat gadgets and gizmos and add-ons that the camera industry pimps out, but in my experience most of them are either gimmicky or easily replicated in Photoshop/Lightroom. Gear is useful, but only to an extent. The truth is, if you can’t take a good photo with a Digital Rebel and a kit lens, you’re still not going to take good photos with a 5D and a 50 1.2L. However, if you CAN take a good photo with a Rebel and a kit lens, investing in professional-quality equipment will help you take the quality of your already-good images to the next level.

Since Courtney is getting married TODAY I can finally show off her bridal session, which is totally one of my favorites ever. I know I know, I say that a LOT… It just seems like every shoot I do these days is my new favorite, up until the next one. That’s a good thing, right? But honestly, this was a really great session. We did most of the shoot at her father’s fire station (interestingly enough, not my first fire station bride) and the second half around some beautiful old buildings in downtown Fort Worth.  Courtney has such a fantastic model’s face and body structure, she looks like this perfect porcelain doll, so it was great to do some more fashion-inspired looks for her.  Here are a few of my faves!
