Many years ago, Darby and I were sisters in Kappa Delta sorority at Texas A&M. We participated in something called Songfest, where a sorority was paired up with a men’s group (in this case, a group of fun, outgoing guys called One Army) and had to perform a song and dance routine. For weeks, we gathered at the Kappa Delta House to plan our skit to a medley of Beauty and the Beast songs. That was definitely one of the more fun experiences I had in college: goofing off in the Kappa Delta dining room, reliving our childhood through Disney songs, trying to figure out how to make a candelabra costume. It’s amazing to think of what came from that simple activity.. I met Corey Oliver, who would later become one of my best friends and the husband of my college roommate, and Darby would meet Mark, who would eventually become her best friend and husband. Their wedding was a real treat for me because I knew so many of the weddings guests, plus the light was perfect all day (which makes SUCH a difference in the photos), and Darby and Mark really went out of their way to infuse aspects of their personality and background into the wedding. This wedding was completely “Team Z,” from beginning to end.

Because there are SO many photos that I love from this wedding, I’m going to break it up into two parts. Here are the pre-ceremony and ceremony favorites:

Darby is one of my favorite people to photograph because she completely wears her emotions on her sleeve. She’s so outgoing and expressive, and it seems like she’s got a huge smile or a hilarious expression on her face in every photo I took that day.

After Darby got dressed, we headed to the Texas A&M campus to get some fun photos of the wedding party.  We just happened to run across a guy in a shirt with a big Z (Mark’s last name is Zahradnik) on it – talk about luck!

The ceremony was held at St.Mary’s, the catholic church in College Station. What a gorgeous church!  There was so much beautiful light streaming in through the windows, and the church pretty much gave us free reign to shoot wherever and however we want, which is incredibly rare.  Ironically enough, it seems like Catholic churches are the least strict when it comes to photo rules, at least in my experience.  Go figure!

Tomorrow morning I will post the second half of this wedding, including their First Look under the Aggie Century Tree and the INSANELY fun Grand March at the reception!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be in Houston for the fabulous wedding of Jennifer and TJ next weekend (April 17-19) and I know there are a lot of you that have been hoping to schedule a meeting or shoot with me while I am there.  I’ve already got two shoots, two meetings, and of course the wedding scheduled, so if you need to meet with me please get in touch ASAP so I can make sure to make some time for you.  I will also be there the following weekend (April  25-26) so I am available then, as well.  Can’t wait to see all my lovely H-town brides and grooms!

Two years

Two years ago today a strange boy who I had been talking to practically non-stop for over a week came and swept me off my feet.  One snowy April afternoon, we raced RC cars over the speedbumps in my highrise parking garage.  We went to a carnival and I impressed him with the finer points of nighttime photography.  He serenaded me to Oh Holy Night on saxophone in an abandoned stairwell, and we drank wine and talked about life.  It was one of the funnest nights of my life to date, and it marked the beginning of an amazing era of my life.

Happy anniversary, shnookums :)
As usual, we celebrated way in advance (dinner and a play this weekend, plus a marathon of our new favorite show), and now for the actual day we completely didn’t plan anything.. Leave me a comment with some suggestions for what we should do to celebrate tonight, or tell me about your favorite anniversary date.   Inspire us!

This past weekend I was helping my sister shop for her wedding dress, and we were amazed at just how few non-strapless dresses there were out there.  It seemed like the only dresses with straps were either extremely simple, or just plain old-looking.  I know that many women aren’t that comfortable showing all that skin on their wedding day, and for girls who have body image issues with their arms, a strapless dress will only make things 100 times worse.  As a wedding photographer, I have to admit that I am not a fan of strapless dresses, because they tend to be very difficult to work with and, more often than not, don’t fit the bride properly. Although I have to admit that the majority of the most beautiful wedding dresses out there are strapless, I also know that for many women, a strapless dress is less than ideal.

So what’s a gal to do?  Well, as I learned this weekend, many bridal ateliers can add cap sleeves to most dresses.  In the newest issue of Elegant Bride (just got mine in the mail this weekend!), I saw a bride (fellow wedding photographer Carrie Patterson, as a matter of fact) who added just two small gathered sections of tulle to create her straps, and it looked incredibly delicate and beautiful, and probably only cost her about $5 to do.

Another bride added a bit of scalloped allencon lace to make a halter, a look  just ADORE!

However, my favorite solution has to be the bolero.  Boleros are so trendy and hot right now, and they instantly couture-ify any wedding gown.  The best part is that they can be removed at any time, so you can go formal for the ceremony and photos, and then remove it when you bustle the gown for the reception.  It’s like having two dresses in one!  Bonzie on Etsy definitely has the cutest boleros, wraps, and bridal scarves I have ever seen, and her prices are very reasonable (most are below $100). Here are a few of my favorites:

If you want something with a little more drama, Modern Romance on Etsy offers an amazing organza capelet that can also be dyed to match your wedding colors, and Countessa on Etsy has some really hot boleros and wraps, including an uber cute black and white damask wrap that I just ordered for myself!  If you want something more traditional, try this lace shrug from Rohm on Etsy or this ruffled neckpiece from indulgencecouture on Etsy.  Many brides think “There’s no way I can pull that off!” (like my sister when I tried to talk her into a birdcage veil), and if you’re a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, then maybe a bolero or wrap isn’t for you.  However, if you’re looking at these photos and thinking “Oh my god that’s so cute I want to do that!” then chances are you are stylish enough that you can totally work it.  Remember, fashion is all about confidence – if you think you look hot in something, everyone else will too.  Just own it, girl!

Wow, this session has a lot of backstory to it…  Be forewarned, I’m about to get really mushy here.

Brittani and Corey Oliver have a very special place in my heart.  Brittani was my college roommate and best friend throughout college.  She was always a source of inspiration to me – from her great fashion sense to her amazing design style to her general all-around craftiness, pretty much everything she touches makes me go “That’s SO cute!”  So, it’s no surprise that when I saw her photographs in college, it made me want to get into photography.  Because of her, I decided to purchase a Canon Rebel (the old school film version, then eventually the digital version, back when it cost like $1500) and take a few photography classes.  That, of course, started me on a crazy whirlwind path that changed the course of my life.  Luckily, I got to return the favor when I played a part in helping her get to know my friend Corey (a financial genius who has played a huge part in helping me get my finances in order, make major advances towards being debt-free, start saving for retirement, and generally spending smarter), who would eventually become her husband.  They were my very first clients for my wedding photography business, and had it not been for their wedding, it’s very VERY unlikely that I ever would have become a wedding photographer.

Given that these two have shared so much of themselves with me, I’m always anxious to find some way to give back to them, so I absolutely jumped at the chance to do a Valentine’s Day portrait session for them.  It takes very very little convincing to get me to photograph a beautiful couple, even less so when they’re two of my best friends!  These guys were total troopers, battling Britt’s influenza-B and 100+ degree fever and Corey’s allergies to cats and horses (we shot most of the session at a horse ranch), as well as risking an illegal trespassing charge and a missed flight, but it was sooooo worth it in the end.  I absolutely LOVE these photos!  Okay, enough talk, onto the photos:

I firmly believe everyone should have a great photo of themselves, plus Britt and Corey are entrepreneurs who both own their own small businesses (Corey makes awesome handmade furniture and Britt is a children’s portrait photographer) so I took some time to do some headshots of them.  They returned the favor for me, but I’ll post those later!

These two are truly amazing.  Separately, they’re two of my favorite people in the world, and have helped me in inumerable ways.  Together, they are my inspiration for a good marriage.  They openly love each other, they make time for each other, they work together towards common goals, they make sacrifices for the benefit of each other and their marriage, and they really do seem to have a great set of priorities.  They have taught me that a relationship, especially a marriage, is not a passive thing that just happens.  It requires effort and work and planning, and both people have to be fully invested to make it work.  B&C, thanks so much for being the best friends I could ever ask for, I love you guys more than words can say!

I just thought I would mention that one of my favorite wedding coordinators just announced that she is doing a workshop for people who are interested in getting into the wedding planning industry.  Kelly Siamants of Sweet Pea Events established herself as a stellar coordinator in Seattle, and has since opened the second branch of her business here in Dallas, and we are so lucky to have her!  If you’re interested in learning more about what it takes to be a wedding coordinator, this is a great opportunity to learn from someone who absolutely knows her stuff.  The workshop will be Wednesday, April 8 at the Dallas Arboretum, and here’s the best part – it only costs $200 to attend, or $150 each if you bring a friend!  For more info, e-mail Kelly at kelly@sweetpeaevents.net or check out her blog here: http://sweetpeaeventsllc.blogspot.com

I just finished up Courtney and Bucky’s wedding, so I wanted to show off some of her bridal session, along with a sneak peek at some of my new branding!  I absolutely worship Courtney’s gorgeous Melissa Sweet dress, and I love that she brought along her dog for the session!  Here are a few of my faves:
