Mind Your Business!

After a humbling and very overwhelming response to the survey I posted last week, I’m happy to announce that I will be hosting my first-ever group workshop!  For more information on the workshop or to sign up, click here to see the info page!

The decision to host a business workshop is not something that I made lightly.  Over the course of my career I’ve been very active in many different photography forums mentoring new photographers, and I’ve spent countless hours “talking shop” with my colleagues about all things business related.  In fact, the reason I created my pricing guide was because I kept seeing photographers asking the same questions about pricing, and I was seeing those photographers making the same mistakes (and the same excuses) again and again.  Since I began offering one-on-one consultations over a year ago, I’ve been amazed to discover just how many photographers have no idea how to handle the business side of what they do, and how that has cost them a frightening amount of money.

The harsh but true reality of being a professional photographer is that most photographers who think they’re making money in their business actually aren’t.  Most people think that if they’re getting any kind of payment at all, they’re turning a profit.  Sadly, that couldn’t be further from the truth.  In 2006, Professional Photographers of America released a Benchmark Study that looked at the numbers of 180 different photographers across the country and analyzed how photography businesses are being run and how much money they’re really making.  Here are some shocking findings from that study:

-The average photographer brings in a salary of approximately $30,000 a year.  (You can make more than that as a manager at the local McDonald’s!)

-The best-run photography studio owners keep about 41% of their gross profits, while the average studio owner keeps approximately 30% of their revenue.  That means that for every $1,000 paid, the average photographer gets to keep about $300.

-Most wedding photography studios need to charge around $5,000 a wedding in order for the studio owner to be able to make a reasonable living.

I know that most of you are probably skeptical of these statements, and think that there’s no possible way they could be accurate.  Believe me when I say that they are very, very, VERY true.  After reading the study I decided to go back and study my own business, and this is what I discovered: My second year of business I had a 27% profit margin and made about $36,000, and the first year I was able to pay all of my bills and taxes and still have enough money to live comfortably was the year I averaged $5,000 a wedding and had a 40% profit margin.  I couldn’t have been more true to the statistics if I tried!  After I released my pricing guide I had a lot of people come to me with their numbers, asking me to check them to make sure they weren’t missing something, and over and over and over again, those statistics proved to be right on the money (no pun intended) for those photographers as well.

It’s easy for people to believe that all it takes to make money in photography is a nice camera and a little talent, but there’s a good reason why well over half of small businesses fail within the first four years.  Running a business is tough.  There are so many ways to fail, and so few ways to succeed, and most people don’t have a mentor who can tell them which is which.  My hope is that my workshop will allow people to have a solid business mentor, if only for a day.  I will share all the things I did wrong and all the things I did right, and the consequences and advantages of both, as well as what I would have done differently if I could.  We’ll talk about everything from tax laws to cash flow to pricing to business plans to target demographics to branding to client management, and all the stuff in between.

If the business side of being a photographer is frustrating you or holding you back, check out the workshop page.  Let’s get your business on the right track so you can stop worrying about your business and start enjoying your craft!

Thanksgiving in my world is about three things:  food, family, and football.  Every year we all gather together and feast on a buffet of turkey, corn, mashed potatoes, stuffing, hominy, cranberry sauce, and warm fresh rolls.  After we stuff ourselves, we waddle over to the couch and flop down to sleep off the tryptophan and wait for our two annual Thanksgiving football games to begin.  The first, naturally, is our home team, the Dallas Cowboys.  Every year our ‘boys play on Turkey Day, and every year we don our blue and silver pom poms and cheer for America’s Team.  The second game is a recent addition to the Thanksgiving roster – my alma mater, Texas A&M.  Traditional my Aggies have played t.u. (what Aggies call the University of Texas) on T+1 (the day after Thanksgiving) but recently they moved the game to Thanksgiving proper, so we got a double dose of football.  Although my Ags came out on the wrong end of the game clock this year – Aggies never lose, we just run out of time, and that couldn’t have been more true than this year – we played an amazing game and fought valiantly until the very end.  In honor of the hard work of my Aggie boys this year, I’m dedicating this week to the Aggie Family.  To start with, I’ve got an engagement session that happened in the same place as the Thanksgiving Day game – College Station!

Marcy and Kyle are a favorite in the Reeves-Gulledge household.  We love Kyle because he’s a real American hero, serving our country in the United States Army.  Having attended A&M, which was once a military school and continues to have very strong ties to the armed forces and civil service, I have a special place in my heart for all the people who sacrifice years of their lives to serve America, and Kyle is a true hero in my eyes.  Marcy is a meteorologist for KTBS in Shreveport, LA, and she happens to be the person that Jason’s family watches every night on the news to get their weather report.  I’m so pumped to be able to work with these guys on their wedding photos, and even more pumped that we got to shoot at one of my favorite places on the planet!  Here are some of my favorites:

We began the day at the Academic Building, a gorgeous old building that is the traditional favorite for photos.

No Aggie photoshoot would be complete without a trip to Northgate, the bar district of Aggieland, where every good Aggie spends his Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Finally, we took a chance on a dream.. Kyle and Marcy were desperate to get a few shots at Kyle Field, but that’s much easier said than done.  Luck was on our side, and we managed to slip in for a few quick shots!  I’m pretty sure there are going to be some very jealous Ags after this post!

We finished up at Fish Pond, another Aggie Tradition.  During every Aggie’s senior year, they take part in Elephant Walk, where all the seniors link arms and walk through campus together to get one last view of their alma mater.  Elephant Walk concludes with a hop into Fish Pond, and Marcy and Kyle were brave enough to relive the moment!

Next up, I’ve got the most Aggie wedding you will EVER see, complete with over $35,000 worth of Aggie Rings!

Now that Autumn is married, I can finally show off her bridals! I adore Autumn, especially when she’s in front of my camera. Her bone structure paired with those amazing blue-green eyes, not to mention how PERFECT her dress is, made my job incredibly easy. Here are a few of my favorites from her session at the Arboretum:

Autumn was generous enough to model a few of my new bridal headpieces for me. I collect all things bridal related – veils, headpieces, sashes, brooches, and anything else that can be used to adorn a bride. I’m not quite sure why I do this, but every time I see an amazing bridal accoutrement, I have to buy it! If you’re one of my brides and you’d like to use either of these pieces (or any from this session) in your bridal session, let me know!

Workshop?

Last night I had the opportunity to spend a wonderful night out with some of my fellow females in the wedding industry. It was so refreshing to be able to spend time with a group of women who completely understand what I’m going through as a small business owner, and we all had a great time “talking shop” (and talking about other things!). One thing we all agreed on is that so many wonderful artists out there are failing miserably because they don’t understand basic business skills like pricing, bookkeeping, branding, marketing, networking, and business management. In fact, so many photographers aren’t even running their business legally – if the IRS or the State Comptroller got ahold of them, they would be buried in penalties and backtaxes, and god forbid something happen to them when they don’t have proper insurance or legal protection! Although it’s great to be able to take beautiful images, without a solid business foundation, you’re destined to fail, so it’s crucial that you get your ducks in a row before you really begin to book clients on a regular basis.

In the past I’ve only offered one-on-one consultations for photographers because I believe that it’s important to customize advice to each person’s specific business, market, and weaknesses. However, I recognize that not everyone can afford a full day private consult, so I’m considering offering an 8 to 10 hour group workshop and/or online webinar for photographers focusing primarily on the business side of things. We may or may not include some time posing and shooting, but the goal of the workshop is for everyone to leave with their business affairs in order (or at least a plan for how to get there).  Before I make any firm decisions, I’d like to gather a little more interest about you guys and what you’re looking for. If you think you might be interested in attending a workshop like this, please take my survey and provide me with some feedback:  Click Here to take survey

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you all!

I want to preface this by saying that I DO NOT shooting maternity portraits! Despite what you are about to see, I am a wedding-only photographer. After posting Gara and Brandon’s maternity session I got several inquiries for families, newborns, and maternity sessions, and while I’m very honored, weddings and wedding-related portraiture consume my life. If you’re interesting in hiring a photographer to shoot your maternity session, there are several wonderful photographers in the Dallas area who specialize in family portraiture and can do some beautiful work for you! I highly recommend Lidia Boicu or Heather Essian.

That said, once in a blue moon I do make an exception and shoot something non-wedding-related. Brana is a fellow wedding industry professional (she helps keep things at Posh Couture Rentals running smoothly) and an all-around lovely person, so I couldn’t resist getting her and her husband Adam in front of my camera. Unfortunately we didn’t quite get the lovely sunny day we were hoping for, but we decided to take the gloomy weather and make it work!

If you need some stunning rentals for your wedding or event, be sure to give Brana and her staff at Posh a call. They do amazing work!

My post today serves three unique purposes.  First of all, it gives all of you a chance to meet my one and only sibling, my big sister Candy.  Candy was the oldest of all the cousins, so for several years she ruled the roost as the center of attention not only with our parents but with all the uncles and aunts and grandparents, as well.  And, as Candy is the classic overachiever, she deserved it – she’s a fantastic dancer, bilingual, a straight A student her entire life, worked several jobs in college even though she had tons of scholarships, and has two degrees from a very prestigious university, not to mention that she is incredibly crafty and always has some kind of new artistic project going on.  Then I came along and ruined everything, and she’s never forgiven me for it!

The second purpose today is to introduce Tom and Candy to the world.  Because they work together, Tom and Candy have had to keep their relationship private for a long, long time.  Very few people know that these guys are even a couple, but they finally got clearance from their office, so this is like their big “coming out” party!  SURPRISE!! I, for one, am really excited about the pending nuptials. Tom and Candy have been good friends for 14 years, and Tom helped Candy get through some really rough times in her life. There’s no one that can make her smile quite like Tom, and I’m so excited to be able to call him my brother-in-law pretty soon!

Finally, it gives me a chance to show off the engagement session I shot for them back in September.  Candy is the ultimate Texan, obsessed with all things Texas-related, so it seemed only natural that we shoot her session at the Texas State Fair.

I am INSANELY excited about Candy’s wedding next May at the Dallas World Aquarium, and yes, I will be shooting the wedding!  Can’t wait!

It’s just a fact that SOMETHING will go wrong on your wedding day. For some lucky brides, it’s a late bridesmaid or a bouquet with the wrong type of flowers. For other not so lucky brides, it’s a power failure at the reception site or a best man who ends up in a jail cell with the wedding rings in his pocket. I’ve seen all of these situations firsthand, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the only thing that can truly ruin a wedding is the way the bride and groom react to these situations. If the bride panics and goed into hysterics or the groom goes on an angry rampage, then everyone is on edge, and the day becomes miserable for everyone involved. On the other hand, if the bride and groom allow these troubles to roll off their shoulders and stay focused on the real meaning behind the day, then the wedding becomes that much more special, and not even the worst emergency can ruin it. Zi and Gary are the epitome of the latter type of couple. They were so focused on enjoying their friends and family and loving each other that not even a freak monsoon could keep everyone at their (outdoor) wedding from having a blast.

The day started off smoothly enough..

Both the ceremony and the reception were being held at Gary’s family’s home in Highland Park, near White Rock Lake.  Gary’s sister did an amazing job decorating their lovely yard, including both soft spring colors and infusing bits of Zi’s heritage, as well.  The ceremony was one of the most beautiful I have ever seen, and the seating with guests on both sides of the gazebo made the whole ceremony feel intimate and open.

As Zi changed into her reception dress, the family prepared for the reception, transforming the ceremony area into a party tent.  Although it had been sprinkling occasionally, the sun had been peeking through and we thought we might be in the clear.

Then, as is wont to happen during May in Texas, the weather suddenly changed, and things started getting a little… wet……

We all waited and waited for the skies to clear, but the rain only got harder and harder, and the afternoon sky turned almost black.  A snap decision was made to move everyone into the living room and continue the festivities!

As evidenced by the photos, these two had smiles glued to their faces all day, even when the rain forced all the wedding guests into the living room.  These two, and their AWESOME families, made sure that no matter what happened in the skies, they were going to have a great party and start Zi and Gary’s wedding off with a bang.  Every bride should take a lesson from these two and remember that it’s possible to have a great wedding day even when the flowers aren’t right, the DJ plays all the wrong songs, the groomsmen get drunk, or the reception ends up happening in someone’s living room!

Special thanks to Scotty Perry for flying all the way out from Louisville to second shoot with me!
